Every inch of space in your home should be useful. Yes that even means the utility closet. Don't let the word "utility" scare you into thinking it's something mechanical or industrial. This is the space where you should be storing your extra stock on products like light bulbs, hand soap, water bottles, cleaning products, toilet paper and even your luggage (if you're lucky enough to have the space!)

Here are some of our favorite ways to make the utility closet both functional and visually appealing.

1. Use storage baskets or bins.

Baskets and bins help you categorize items and contain them in one space, especially if you are storing items on shelves. There are so many different styles of storage container that fit a variety of needs including space, style and function. Check out our recommendations in our shop.

2. Keep like items together.

Make sure you are separating out your items for different uses and keeping them together. This will help you find them when you need them, and makes your utility closet look more streamlined.

3. Use a wall rack for cleaning supplies.

A broom holder or wall rack will keep your mops and brooms from collecting in a pile leaning against the corner and falling over every time you reach for one. A wall organizer allows you to clip the broom or mop in place so it is accessible when you need it.

4. Use a door organizer.

If your closet has a door, use a door organizer to give you more space for your utility closet items. There are a variety of products available that can fit different doors. Our favorite is the Elfa system, which is stylish but functional.
