Overstuffed cabinets can be frustrating. You cannot find anything, and that only increases your stress. You want to declutter, but you do not want to throw everything away. Reorganization is all about mindset, rather than simple disposal. It is also more sustainable than throwing away excessive amounts of items.

Today we’re sharing a few simple ways to make overstuffed cabinets feel functional again without pulling everything out or starting from scratch.

These kitchen cabinet organization ideas can help you create a system that feels practical, accessible, and easier to maintain long term.

Adopt a New Methodology

Your mindset is important when entering reorganization periods. Knowing the items you have and understanding their rationale is crucial.

Categorize by Frequency

A good way to begin is to adopt a new methodology for handling items. Categorize everything based on frequency. For example, you may use forks every day but chopsticks only once a week. Some people have fine china for special occasions. Commonly used items should be at the front of cabinets and drawers for easy access, while occasional items can be at the back or in a closet.

Divide Items by Use

Separate unused items from those you actually do use. An example could be a smoothie machine you got when you wanted to have a smoothie every day, versus the cheese grater you use for your lunch consistently. Do not feel guilty about these objects. Some people keep items like the smoothie machine because they are scared of future regret, but you can let go of that fear.

Locate Sentimental Objects

Find products that you keep for sentimental value, like your grandmother’s old dish tray or the dog bowl your old pet used to drink out of. You do not have to get rid of these items, but you should remember that the memories they carry are also within you. Getting rid of anything sentimental does not diminish a memory’s value.

You can keep one piece of an item, like a cup from a teaset, to commemorate it while still freeing up space. Also, it is okay to donate gifts that you never use. You can acknowledge the kindness internally, but toss it if you have had it a while.

Design and Organize Cabinets for Access

After identifying all the objects, you can design your cabinets and drawers for optimal access.

Use Vertical Space

Using a cabinet’s vertical space can maximize the area to fit more items. Items like shelf risers and under-shelf baskets can provide ample room to store products in the same place without clutter. If you purchase stackable containers, make sure you get ones that pull out or turn so you do not have to constantly unstack them.

Set up Dividers

Sometimes, you have dissimilar items that you want to separate without wasting space in the same cabinet. Much like using bookcases to divide rooms, you can place a divider on shelves for better organization. This keeps items from touching without sacrificing the entire shelf to a few miscellaneous objects.

Put Seasonal Items in Storage

If you have seasonal items, such as plates you use only at Thanksgiving or birthday decorations, store them in the back of a drawer, a separate closet or another space. You do not need these items all the time, so their accessibility is not as important as daily necessities.

Create an Unsure Container

You may have items that you just cannot decide whether to keep or get rid of. Place these items in a container and store them away. If months pass and you still have not opened the container, you may not actually need those products. If you do decide to throw something away, consider selling, donating or recycling it instead. In 2022, landfills were a major source of emissions, so reducing that number when you can is beneficial.

Purchase New Items More Thoughtfully

Once you have successfully categorized your items and understand how your mind views them, you can make more thoughtful purchases in the future. Consider whether you will actually use an item before buying it. Overall, this reorganization process should give you more confidence in your decision-making.

Use Space Without Much Sacrifice

Finding a clear method and designing a new storage system helps declutter a cabinet or drawer. Excessive items can cause unwarranted stress, so relying on a new organization system that utilizes space instead of tossing everything out is a good alternative.
