The Power Of Flowers

Having fresh flowers is one of the easiest ways to add a beautiful design element to your space, plus there is actual scientific proof that it can do wonders for your health and wellbeing! Beautiful spaces AND a clear mind? Count us in.
Ever think about why we bring flowers to hospital visits? Fresh flowers can instantly lift your mood, and it’s been shown that patients in rooms filled with flowers need less pain medication, have lower blood pressure, and are generally less anxious. Flowers (and greenery), can boost creativity (think about how many paintings there are of flowers!) and can freshen the air in your home.
When choosing your flowers, color is important. Consider less saturated, lighter colors if you’re looking for a relaxing atmosphere, and vibrant, bold colors to energize you. Keep this in mind if you’re getting a bunch with mixed flowers as well, choosing colors that are closer to monochromatic for calming, and a wider range of colors for a spark of vitality.
Flowers don’t have to be a luxury purchase, even grocery store flowers can be beautiful with a little finessing.
Follow these steps and your fresh flowers can last 2-3 weeks!
1. Sounds crazy but as soon as you get them home, submerge the entire bunch underwater for about 30 minutes. Put them in the sink with a pan on top! This allows the water to enter and hydrate the entire bloom instead of only taking in water through the stem, and evaporating quickly out the top.
2. Cut the stems at an angle, and trim off the foliage that will fall below the water line in the vase. This reduces the bacteria in the water, keeping that murky flower smell at bay.
3. Put 2 or 3 small drops of bleach in cool water in your vase, this stops the bacteria that eats away at the stem (and it doesn’t bleach your flowers we promise!).
4. Buy crowning glory! This stuff WORKS. A top floral designer secret, it’s a wax sealant that stops the flowers from dehydrating. Spray all over flowers to preserve them, its environmentally friendly and won’t harm kids or pets.
5. Change the water every 2-3 days. Each time you do this you can also trim the stems about half an inch.
